Homecoming Football Game: Thursday, October 10, 2024
Unity Day
Unity Day at Prairie View Elementary is on Tuesday, October 15. We encourage all students and staff members to wear orange on this day. October allows our school to unite against bullying and show that we are united for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
Fall Festivals
We will celebrate with Fall Festival parties in our classrooms on Thursday, October 31. We will not have Halloween parties, so there will be no costumes, hair dye, or other dressing up related to the holiday; we ask students to dress up for their home activities. In addition, we request that students do not bring treats to share with their classmates again this year.
Hawk Pride
We teach/reteach, recognize, and celebrate Hawk Pride expectations, which are respectful, responsible, and ready. Students are recognized with verbal praise and Hawk Pride tickets when they are following expectations. When our students have filled our school-wide container with Hawk Pride tickets, they are recognized with an all-school celebration. Our first all-school celebration this year will be extra recess. In addition, individual students are recognized each Monday morning during our Hawk Pride ticket drawing. We draw ten names each week. When a student's name is selected, their name is announced over the PA system, and they choose from a menu item of prizes.

Our PAC recently purchased a Hawk Mascot for our school using fundraising dollars! Students are currently voting for our Hawk’s name. Classes will take pictures with the mascot next week. When we have earned our next all-school celebration, students will receive their class picture and have the opportunity to decorate a frame. Our kindergarten and fourth-grade students will pair up with their buddy classes for this event.
Alice Letter/Drill
We will participate in our Alice drill next week. ISD 728 is committed to providing the safest possible environment for its students and staff. To maintain this environment, we consistently work with law enforcement to learn and implement best practices in school safety and security.
ISD 728 recently created a partnership with ALICE Training Institute. The acronym stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate. ALICE prepares us with proactive, options-based strategies for an active shooter on campus situation while remaining age and ability-appropriate.
All ISD 728 teachers, staff, and administrators have been trained in the ALICE protocols. Students will review this information with their teachers and other school staff next week. During this time, students will receive an overview of the program and talk through a drill with a classroom teacher. Students can ask their teachers questions about the drill. They will be allowed access to any mental health services available on campus, including counselors, school psychologists, social workers, or other student support specialists as needed.
In advance of this review, we are asking parents to watch these video presentations that will be shared with our grade K-2 & 3-7 students:
After the ALICE training, I encourage you to speak with your student(s) and ask about the information they learn. You can find more information on ALICE, talking points, and school emergency information (including how to respond to a school emergency) by visiting the ISD 728 Prevention & Safety Department website.

Early Pickups
Regular attendance is essential for students to be successful in school. School personnel will make every effort to encourage regular attendance, but the ultimate responsibility lies with the students and their parents/guardians. We understand that not all appointments can be scheduled outside of school, and early pick-ups are sometimes unavoidable. We ask that any early pick-up request be made with at least a 2-hour notice, preferably right away in the morning, via our pves.attendance@isd728.org or through Campus Parent Portal.
Art to Remember
Thank you to those who supported our Art to Remember fundraiser for the art room. All funds raised will support future visiting artists as well as sketchbooks for 3rd graders. If you ordered any items from Art to Remember and shipped to Prairie View, they will arrive in mid-December and be sent home with your child before winter break.
It’s not too late to order items! Items can be ordered through December 29th, 2023. Go to ArtToRemember.com and search for your child’s name, enter their online order code, or upload art to shop. These keepsakes make great gift items for family and friends! At this point, orders will be shipped to your home.
Grades Available on Parent Portal December 5th
Student grades will be live on Parent Portal on Tuesday, December 5th.

If you have questions about when to keep your student home from school, please use the following as a guide. More information can be found on the Health Services webpage HERE. Be sure to report your student's absence daily if they are gone consecutively, and report any positive diagnosis.
Students should stay home from school when:
-
A fever (100.4 degrees or higher)
-
Vomiting or diarrhea
-
Rash of unknown cause (check with health care provider)
-
Infection requiring antibiotics
*If your student has been seen by a physician and diagnosed, please let us know.
A student can return to school when:
-
No fever for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and well enough to participate in school.
-
No vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours after the last episode and ability to keep food down.
-
Rash is cleared by a physician.
-
12 hours after the first antibiotic dose, symptoms have resolved and/or as directed by a health care provider.
When students are ill at school, an attempt is made to first contact the parent and then the name listed on the student emergency information. If you have any questions regarding the above information or your child’s illness, please call your school nurse or family physician.
eLearning Days
Why eLearning Days?
eLearning Days are intended to provide access to learning on days when there are school cancellations due to inclement weather. While these days cannot replace students' face-to-face time with their teachers, it can provide continuous learning when school is canceled. eLearning Days also eliminates the need for makeup days at the end of the school year, helping families plan summer activities.
Students in grades Early Childhood through 5th Grade will utilize Choice Boards on an eLearning Day. These Choice Boards were distributed to Prairie View families on Monday, November 7th. They can also be viewed and downloaded by visiting www.isd728.org/ChoiceBoards.
Parent Involvement
The Parent Advisory Council is looking to fill a few board positions for the 2024-25 school year. If you are interested in learning more about this fun and rewarding position, please join us at our next meeting on Tuesday, November 28th. The meeting dates and times for the 24/25 school year have not been set yet, so we welcome feedback about that as well.
-
THANK YOU to all who participated in the APEX Fundraiser. We raised over $54k for our school!
-
Students will each get a shirt provided by PAC in school color.
-
School Mascot: PAC, Student Council, and Parent Liaisons have approved to co-fund a Mascot!

Book Swap
Prairie View Elementary will be hosting a Book Swap on Tuesday, February 20th from 4:00 - 7:30pm in the Living Room to encourage student reading. The Book Swap allows students to exchange books they no longer read with other books that have been donated.
How it works:
-
At home decide which of your gently used books would be good to exchange at school. Books must be gently used (no rips, no stains, no missing pages or writing in them), school and age appropriate.
-
Books will be brought in to school on your child’s classroom media day.
-
Students may bring in 5 books to be donated between February 5th -9th.
-
On the day of the Book Swap students will check in to pick up their tickets. Each ticket is good for one single book. All trades are final. No money will be exchanged for the Book Swap. This is strictly a book recycling event.
-
Once the Book Exchange has been completed, all remaining books will be donated to other programming.
Book Fair
Hooray it's almost book fair day! Next week students will do a book fair preview during media class. Sales will ONLY happen during conference times. Please DO NOT send money to purchase before conference dates. If you won't be here for conferences, purchases can be made online and sales are credited to our school. https://www.
Thank you for your continued support. All proceeds benefit our students by purchasing new books for the media center.
Prairie View Hawk Pride
As a reminder, students are recognized with verbal praise and Hawk Pride tickets when they follow expectations. When our students recently filled our school-wide container with Hawk Pride tickets, they earned a performance by the Prairie View Middle School Drumline to recognize their success! In addition, individual students are recognized each Monday morning during our Hawk Pride ticket drawing. We draw ten names each week. When a student's name is selected, their name is announced over the PA system, and they choose from a menu item of prizes.
Every Meal Enrollment
Food will be available for pick-up twice/month, the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. Food is packaged in bags that offer a variety of food items. Privacy is protected. Visit Every Meal for more information and to sign up.

MAY 2024
Message from the Principal
As we head into our last few weeks of school, I have three huge requests for parents. First, we need help keeping our students safe as they travel to and from school when they bike and walk daily. Please ensure your students do not arrive at the crossing to our schools before 8:55 am when our crossing guards arrive to supervise and cross them safely and take time to go over these bike safety expectations with your students. Second, please RSVP to our May 24th Family Picnic today if you have not already done so. Finally, we are still in need of 11 of 12 volunteers for our Family Picnic. Third, please consider signing up HERE to make this event successful. (Volunteers can still attend their student's picnic). Please add their grade level(s) in the comments. Thank you for partnering with our staff to support our students!
Also, I want to extend our gratitude to our PAC for sponsoring tomorrow’s ice cream truck and all parents for supporting our activities for teacher appreciation week. We appreciate the hardwork and dedication of our board members and parents’ generosity!
Finally, we’re excited to recognize our fourth grade students with our celebration on Friday morning and with a few special activities during the last week of school. We’re proud to send them to middle school next year!
